Overcoming the Back to School Blues After the Holidays

I don’t know about you but we definitely needed a break from school over the holidays. Our days were filled with sleeping in, unlimited screen time (gasp!), toys scattered everywhere, unlimited tv (another gasp!) , video games, staying up way past normal bedtime and going to various holiday events. I know I know you might be clutching your pearls in shocking response to “unlimited screen time, tv, and video games” but I told you before and I’ll tell you again we keep it real over here. We were on break and I loved every minute of it lol!

But honestly, once our break was coming to an end, I was happy to have some order back to my house but I was secretly dreading school starting back along with the busyness of all of their activities, and I knew if I felt that way then my kids were probably feeling the same way too. So to help mitigate potential attitudes and grumpiness I started to remind them about school starting back the week prior. I let them know the exact day we were going to start and I also reminded them how long they had been on break and all of the fun that we had. I also let them know that they would be getting back on their bedtime schedule and that their fun activities like music class and gymnastics would be starting back as well so that they had some things to look forward to and not just feel sad about school.

Once our first day back to school arrived I decided to make it a fun games day. We played games like Clumsy Thief, Boggle, Multiplication War, I Spy, and Sight Word Splat. We also read some books, watched a couple of learning videos and ended our day early. This made our first day back so much fun and allowed us to ease back into our school schedule so that we all could have time to adjust and it was definitely a success! The kids and I were laughing and playing, and games in my opinion always makes learning time fun and is a wonderful way to brighten any grumpy moods.

Let me know how you overcome back to school blues after the holidays?
